The Diaspora Network: Your Cheat Code for Giving Back
Chris Cochran
On October 9, 2025, Entrepreneurs Across Borders (EAB) hosted the kickoff event for the Diaspora Network in New York City — a powerful evening that brought together entrepreneurs, investors, and diaspora leaders to explore how capital, capacity, and community can converge to drive lasting impact.
Developed in partnership with Venture Philanthropy Blueprint (VPB), the Diaspora Network is part of a growing movement to create structured, sustainable ways for members of the Caribbean diaspora to give back by supporting entrepreneurs at home and abroad.
A Shared Vision for Change
The evening opened with Alain Leroy, founder of VPB, who shared his personal story as the child of Caribbean immigrants turned entrepreneur and investor. His message underscored the belief that business can be a force for good — that profitability and purpose can, and should, coexist.

Martin Babinec, Founder of Entrepreneurs Across Borders (EAB), shared the story behind the organization’s creation and its guiding mission. EAB was born from his belief that entrepreneurship is the most powerful driver of economic and social mobility—and that those who have achieved success have a responsibility to help others do the same. Drawing on his own journey as a founder who built and scaled a global company from upstate New York, Martin created EAB to connect experienced entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders with emerging founders in developing nations. The goal, he explained, is to build bridges across borders—mobilizing talent, resources, and mentorship to empower local entrepreneurs, strengthen communities, and create lasting pathways out of poverty through enterprise.
For EAB, this partnership reflects our long-standing commitment to supporting entrepreneurs in developing nations gain access to the networks, knowledge, and support they need to succeed. Together, we’re creating pathways for the diaspora to mentor, invest, and collaborate in ways that have measurable impact.
Stories That Inspire
The event highlighted the work of four remarkable Caribbean founders whose ventures span technology, mental health, and cultural entrepreneurship:
- Adam Cummings, founder of Appirion Digital Pro and Dwella, using technology to transform property management.
- Melissa Powell, founder of Pocmi and Chief Strategy Officer at Quill, advancing HR tech and labor mobility.
- Lynda Simon-Taylor, founder of Lighthouse Mental Health Counseling and co-founder of Mentara Health, bridging mental health and professional development.
- Dr. Paul H. Dorestant, co-founder of BK9 Restaurant & Bar, using entrepreneurship to celebrate culture and community.
Their journeys reminded everyone of both the untapped potential within the diaspora and the barriers that still exist — from limited access to capital to restrictive investment frameworks.
Building Bridges Through Capital, Capacity, and Community
EAB Executive Director Chris Cochran spoke about the urgent need to modernize the systems that limit investment in Caribbean ventures. By working collaboratively through the Diaspora Network, EAB and VPB are designing solutions that connect capital with capacity, creating tangible support for entrepreneurs who are ready to scale their businesses.
The Network’s three foundational pillars — Capital, Capacity, and Community — define its approach:
- Capital: Flexible investment to validate and grow early ventures.
- Capacity: Access to skilled professionals who help build marketing, technology, and operational systems.
- Community: Mentorship and peer networks connecting emerging founders with seasoned entrepreneurs.
A Movement for Builders, Backers, and Believers
The Diaspora Network is not just an event — it’s an invitation. Whether as a mentor, investor, or service provider, every member of the diaspora can play a role in building a more connected and equitable entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Through platforms like EAB Connect, hundreds of entrepreneurs in Jamaica are already benefiting from training, mentorship, and global exposure — proving that when the diaspora unites around supporting entrepreneurs, everyone wins.
Looking Ahead
Following its successful kickoff, the Diaspora Network will continue to grow through future events in New York, Miami, and beyond, along with virtual gatherings to keep members connected worldwide. Mark your calendar for our first Diaspora network event in South Florida: January 29, 2026. More info coming soon!
This is just the beginning. Together, we’re unlocking a new era of diaspora-driven entrepreneurship support, where giving back doesn’t just change lives — it builds legacies.
